Composer: Franz Schubert arranged by – David Evan Thomas
Text by: Franz von Schober
Instrumentation: SATB soli or chorus, piano 4-hands
Duration: approx. 2 minutes
Date Written: 2008
Commissioned: The Schubert Club
Premiere: 2008, Saint Paul Summer Song Festival
Program Note:
Schubert’s song An die Musik is perhaps the finest and most famous ode to music. Schober’s poem is simple and direct, and Schubert’s setting is perfectly clear and sincere. This arrangement preserves Schubert’s accompaniment, expands the solo line in a polyphonic setting, and adds a primo piano part, making it compatible with the accompaniment of Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzer. And for Schubert connoisseurs, there’s a sly reference at the end. Commissioned in 2008 by the Schubert Club for its Saint Paul Summer Song Festival, this arrangement has been performed by The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Text:
Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden, Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt, Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb’ entzunden, Hast mich in eine beßre Welt entrückt, In eine beßre Welt entrückt! |
You, noble Art, in how many grey hours, When life’s mad tumult wraps around me, Have you kindled my heart to warm love, Have you transported me into a better world, Transported into a better world! |
Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf’ entflossen, Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir, Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen, Du holde Kunst, danke dir dafür, Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir! |
Often has a sigh flowing out from your harp, A sweet, divine harmony from you Unlocked to me the heaven of better times, You, noble Art, I thank you for it. You, noble Art, I thank you! |
