I had long wanted to write a piano work that would be useful as service music and attractive as a piece of piano music. Sonja’s beautiful playing and keen musicianship has been an inspiration to me for many years, beginning with the premiere of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/davidevanthomas.com\/product\/blessings-song-cycle-for-tenor-print\/\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBlessings: 5 Poems of James Wright\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, which she gave with Vern Sutton in 2000.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wrote  \u003cem\u003eMeditations\u003c\/em\u003e as the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic began to spread. As the United States suffered under the dual handicaps of incapable leadership and novel virology, I sought a focus that was positive in both emotional and civic senses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/katharine-lee-bates-biography-3530877\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"javascript:window.open('https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/katharine-lee-bates-biography-3530877', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;\"\u003eKatharine Lee Bates\u003c\/a\u003e (1859 –1929) wrote the poem “Pikes Peak” after visiting Colorado in 1893. It was published in the Fourth of July edition of \u003cem\u003eThe Congregationalist\u003c\/em\u003e in 1895. \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/America_the_Beautiful\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"javascript:window.open('https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/America_the_Beautiful', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;\"\u003eHere\u003c\/a\u003e are several versions of the text.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany composers suggested music for the text over the next decade, but the tune that is now traditionally associated with it is MATERNA, by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.songhall.org\/profile\/Samuel_A_Ward\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"javascript:window.open('https:\/\/www.songhall.org\/profile\/Samuel_A_Ward', '_blank', 'noopener'); return false;\"\u003eSamuel A. Ward\u003c\/a\u003e (\u003ctime class=\"counter no-seperator year\" datetime=\"1847\" data-count=\"1847\"\u003e1847\u003cspan class=\"hidden-mobile\"\u003e–\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/time\u003e\u003ctime class=\"hidden-mobile counter no-seperator\" datetime=\"1903\" data-count=\"1903\"\u003e1903)\u003c\/time\u003e, the organist at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey, who had composed the tune in 1888 for another text. It was published with Bates’s poem in 1910 under the title “America the Beautiful.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI could have called my treatment Variations, but rather than varying the tune as a whole, I’ve taken select phrases of Katharine Lee Bates’s poem and worked fancifully with the underlying tones. The effect is to meditate on each phrase of the poem:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eSpacious Skies\u003c\/strong\u003e: after locating the tune in a constellation of tones, a treatment with the tune singing in the soprano.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAmber Waves\u003c\/strong\u003e: continuous step-wise notes create a liquid texture.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAbove the Fruited Plain:\u003c\/strong\u003e a steady flow of quintuplets proliferates.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eAmerica! In 2020 she was learning a Chopin mazurka every week. He studied at the University of Lewisburg (now Bucknell University), was ordained in 1854, and went on to serve congregations at several churches in the East.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLowry considered preaching his main vocation, and he was a spellbinding orator. Hymn-writing was a sideline, but he penned more than 500 hymn tunes, often writing text as well as music. And his rhetoric infects his music. His tunes are splendid, full-throated melodies that are great fun to sing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough he was essentially self-taught as a musician, music was always nearby: “My brain is a sort of spinning machine,” he said, “for there is music running through it all the time.” Lowry pursued the study of music later in life, and he shaped the American-style gospel hymn as the editor of more than two dozen hymnals.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe arrangements here treat three of Lowry’s most popular hymns. “How Can I Keep from Singing?” echoes in tones what those words express. “I Need Thee Every Hour” presents the tune in the left hand between the hours of eleven and midnight, with Verdi’s ingenious bell-harmonies from Falstaff worked into the coda.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Shall We Gather at the River” was conceived during a heat wave while Lowry was pastor of the Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
