And all of the antiphons end with the supplication “Come” – to teach, redeem, deliver, save us. The music follows this same two-part structure. The first part of each antiphon describes the particular messianic aspect: for example, Radiant Dawn is supported by a light 16th -note ostinato; mirroring melodic lines describe the shape of the Key of David; the King of the Nations treads with measured steps. The second part in all the settings features the plaintive supplication “Come,” and often ends in E major with a minor sixth scale degree. Musical influences include Arvo Pärt’s gorgeous setting of the same texts, the Gregorian chant itself (similar in melodic contour for all of the antiphons and heard most clearly in the second movement), and in the final movement, a hint of the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” – Carol Barnett

Liturgical note: The Magnificat is sung daily throughout the year at vespers or evensong, which is a traditional daily evening service of the Western and Eastern Churches. And all of the antiphons end with the supplication “Come” – to teach, redeem, deliver, save us. The music follows this same two-part structure. In tracing the genesis of the human race back to its source, Mr. Darwin had left Adam out altogether… Jesting with Mr. Beecher [Rev. Thomas K. Beecher, of Elmira, New York] and other friends in Elmira, I said there seemed to be a likelihood that the world would discard Adam and that in the course of time Adam’s very name would be forgotten… [T]his calamity ought to be averted; a monument would accomplish this, and Elmira ought not to waste this honorable opportunity to do Adam a favor and herself a credit.

“Then the unexpected happened. Two bankers came forward…not for fun, not for sentiment, but because they saw in the monument certain commercial advantages for the town… One of the bankers subscribed five thousand dollars…the other one subscribed half as much... We got designs made – some of them were from Paris.

“In the beginning – when it was as yet a joke – I had framed a humble and beseeching and perfervid petition to Congress begging the government to build the monument… I sent it to General Joseph R. Hawley, who was then in the House, and he said he would present it. But he did not do it. He explained that when he came to read it he was afraid of it; it was too serious, too gushy, too sentimental – the House might take it for earnest.”

– Carol Barnett

Text:

The text for A Monument to Adam is adapted from Mark Twain’s petition:

A MONUMENT TO ADAM
( To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives
of the United States In Congress Assembled)

WHEREAS,

A number of citizens of the city of Elmira in the state of New York, determined to erect a monument to Adam, and moved by a sentiment of love and duty, beg to lay before you the following facts.

1. Runeberg (1804-1877), "after the German of Franz Carl Heimer (1768-1822)." The English translation by Henry Grafton Chapman appears in the 1909 collection Songs of Sweden: Eighty-Seven Swedish Folk and Popular Songs. Since the work was to be premiered in the spring, I chose two of the stanzas of E. E. Cummings' longer poem, "Epithalamion," that glorify that season. The music has madrigal tendencies, chiefly in the way the voices imitate each other, and in its occasional use of word-painting. The opening phrase, sung at the octave by all voices and reappearing several times throughout the work, is an homage to one of my teachers, Dominick Argento, who I imagined could have written such a phrase. Several musical exuberances are inspired by the sheer untrammeled joy of the Cummings text: the hesitant "mm, mm, mm, mm" after "forgetfulness," the "trump" with its lengthy rolled "r," the prolonged "s" on "whispers" and "silence," and the word "primeval" degenerating into a wind-through-the-pines sound effect.

text

And still the mad magnificent herald Spring
assembles beauty from forgetfulness
with the wild trump of April:

A silver sudden parody of snow
tickles the air to golden tears, and hark!
the flicker's laughing yet, while on the hills
the pines deepen to whispers primeval and throw
backward their foreheads to the barbarous bright
sky, and suddenly from the valley thrills
the unimaginable upward lark
and drowns the earth and passes into light

And still the mad magnificent herald Spring
assembles beauty...

O still miraculous May! Thus the text includes not only the last words of Christ, but elements that move the action along: the words of the crowd as it turns into a bloodthirsty, taunting mob; The statements of the two thieves, one despairing, one hopeful; and the austere narrative passage “erat autem fere hora sexta”. The crowd sections often build to climaxes which are interrupted by the soprano saxophone and the tenor section, who for the most part share the role of Christ. The saxophone also intensifies the emotion of the crowd, occasionally supporting and doubling the voice parts.

Verba Ultima was commissioned by the Dale Warland Singers with funds provided by Perry Phillips in honor of Elaine Phillips’ 49th birthday.

text

Filiae...
Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
Filii nostri, fili nostri.
Crucifige, crucifige illum!
